Dear All,
I say to anyone who thinks the fame of William Shakespeare relies upon
this 'commerce as art' thing, read ANY of the contemporary artists and
do the old card game trick: play for play, poem for poem, (and virtually
line for line) Shakespeare has a better hand. He is a better poet,
writer and thinker than any of his contemporaries. I say this half way
through 476 EM plays in original spelling form.
Sometimes, in a lesser age such as ours, people find the idea of
greatness to hard to take. Jonson the other great English artist of the
age (and Shakespeare's friend) knew otherwise.
Who do you want to trust - Gary Taylor or Ben Jonson?
All best,
Marcus
