Subject: Jensen Collection
Contributions of appropriate Shakespeariana from SHAKSPER members are
gratefully welcome.
The Michael P. Jensen Collection for Shakespeare in Mass Media and
Popular Culture has opened at Southern Oregon University's Lenn and
Dixie Hannon Library in Ashland, Oregon. The collection represents a
range of Shakespeare related materials derivative of, inspired by,
adapted from, and mentioning Shakespeare. The intent is to make these
materials available to both scholars and the public, anyone interested
in the actual artifacts of this burgeoning field of academic study. It
is a place to find films, television productions, radio shows, audio
books, comic books, comic strips, novels, short stories, plays, art,
toys, dolls, games, postcards, bookmarks, and other items relating to
Shakespeare and his characters. Believing that today's junk mail will be
of interest 100 years from now, marketing materials from publishers of
Shakespeare books and Shakespeare Festivals will be collected and
cataloged by year, along with a wide array of theater programs.
The collection is currently a mere couple of hundred items, but will
grow by several dozen each year as Jensen continues to find and catalog
materials. A finding guide is being created to assist users in accessing
this important collection, with Jensen writing one paragraph
descriptions of everything in which the Shakespeare content is not
obvious. The finding guide will eventually be available on-line.
To spotlight the opening of the collection, this fall Hannon library
will display selected items in its second floor exhibit case. The
display will coincide with a lecture that Mike Jensen will present
entitled, "The Oregon Shakespeare Festival's 32 Years on Radio." This
lecture is planned for Monday, October 30 at 4 p.m. in the Meese Meeting
Room (Library 305). Please contact the Hannon Library at 541-552-5835
for more information.
To make the collection as complete as possible, Mike Jensen actively
solicits donations. If you have a piece of Shakespeariana that you would
like to donate, art or kitsch, please contact him at
