In an essay in the collection "Shakespeare and the New Europe" (ed. Mick
Hattaway et al, 1995) there is a brief discussion of a Romanian
production in which Horatio is a tool of Claudius and sets up a fake
ghost with the intention of trying to trap Hamlet. Sounds intriguingly
like the Akunin version.
