Subject: Number of Shakespeare Performances
Dear folks,
I'm working on a book for non-academic readers, and I'm looking for some
gee-whiz statistics on Shakespeare's popularity- number of books and
articles published on him each year, number of sessions at academic
conferences, that sort of thing.
One number I'd be glad to get is the number of performances of his
plays-worldwide, I suppose, though in specific countries might also
do-each year. Has anyone come across such an estimate?
Yes, of course it would be a very rough estimate, and much would depend
on how the question is framed (professional productions? school plays?
-- adaptations and translations?). I'm not looking for
three-decimal-places accuracy, just someone's educated guess about an
order of magnitude that I can introduce with "according to one
estimate," or something like that.
Has anyone seen such a total?
