Comment: Re: SHK 18.0111 Stage Money
About ten years ago there was a Merchant of Venice in London (RSC?) with
Peter (Phillip) Voss as Shylock in which, at the trial scene when Shylock
was offered bags of money in settlement of the bond, the money bags
spilled open and Shylock, slipped on the gold coins and fell; then, trying
to rise again and again, he kept slipping on them and couldn't get to his
feet. Rather effective in its way. Perhaps a wee bit of research into
the date and personnel would reveal what was used for coins in that major
and well-financed production.

[Editor's Note: There were two Merchants at the time: one at the Globe,
the other at the RSC. I saw the RSC in Stratford and Tony's memory is
accurate. I saw the Globe version in London. They Both were discussed on
the list, and interested parties should consult the archives. -HMC]

Another inexpensive, & quick, source for stage coins: orientaltrading.com.
Search 'gold coins.' You'll get several selections starting about at $4
per gross, plus s&h of course. Pass on the chocolate & gum ones *smile*...
too tempting to starving actors.
