A. L. Rowse
This is a brief addenda to Anne Cuneo's message about Professor Rowse.
In 1956 as a very young and insecure assistant professor of English at
the University of Kansas, the Dean suddenly sent word that he was
sending A.L. Rowse to sit in on my seminar. I was terrified. It would
soon become clear to every one that I was ignorant beyond belief and
should be cashiered like Dreyfus in the old movie in front of the entire
MLA membership. Quite the contrary. No one could have been kinder or
more gentle than Professor Rowse. He left me a model for how to behave
toward younger colleagues.
