Comment: Re: SHK 18.0215 The National Players
The National Players I know of is a company that used to be sponsored by
the theatre program at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., a
company started over fifty years ago by the "legendary" Father Hartke.
I think they were, or now are, also supported by the state theatre of
Maryland at Olney. Their mission was always to bring the classical
Western theatre repertoire, with a strong leaning toward Shakespeare, to
every nook and cranny of the country. It always struck me as a noble
and essential expression of the traveling players ideal: a bus load of
graduate level actors, doing their own tech and administration in
addition to performing, going to the smallest town halls and gymnasiums
pretty much everywhere as part of a year-long tour. The scripts were
trimmed but the classically trained performers were perfectly fine. But
I haven't seen one of their productions in over ten years, so...I hope
standards have remained high.

The National Players did an outdoor MUCH ADO here last summer. Their
productions are skilled, and tend to be focused, accessible and
appealing to a wide range of viewers, tightly-paced. -- Neil Novelli
