Subject: Books to Buy
A small private school has been given six hundred dollars to buy books
on Shakespeare, and by extension, Elizabethan drama. There might be some
matching money, but not much. They will bear the cost of adding the
books to the collection; this money is for acquisitions alone.
I have been asked for suggestions. I presume that they have a few
volumes of Shakespeare, perhaps some Yale or Arden Shakespeares, at any
rate, enough. They have an OED, several years old. They want to know
what would comprise a fairly definitive set of critical books on
Shakespeare.
No rare books, preferably things that could be found at a good book
store, easily ordered, probably for certain in print or cheap at
Alibris, etc. Paperbacks that could be bound would be excellent. They
would consider buying used books if in excellent condition.
What would you suggest for a small college's Shakespeare section? What
are the thirty-five must have books on Shakespeare?
