Subject: 18.0774 Shakespeare as Falstaff
Comment: Re: SHK 18.0774 Shakespeare as Falstaff
The best we can hope for of course is intelligent guess not hard
evidence. It is widely accepted that the actor who played Prince Hal
"matured" to play Hamlet. It seems mostly likely that the part of
Falstaff, perhaps originally conceived as a part for the clown, quickly
outgrew that actor. I think it probable that the player of Falstaff
would have played the King in Hamlet. I make this point briefly in our
Cambridge edition of Part One and in the forthcoming Greenwood encyclopedia.
Cheers,
Herb
