Subject: New Adaptation of Merchant of Venice
Today's Woman's Hour (BBC Radio 4) had an interview with the Jewish
playwright Julia Pascal about her adaptation of 'The Merchant of Venice'
that opens at the Arcola Theatre, London tonight. She has given it a
frame of a holocaust survivor Sarah (Ruth Posner, who is herself a
Warsaw ghetto survivor) coming across a performance of the play in
Venice creating 'a double ghetto effect'. There are added scenes by
Pascal filling out Shylock's back story and dealing with his relations
with Jessica but the trial scene is left intact. It plays at the Arcola
until October 13.
