Subject: Fourth Blackfriars Conference
The American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Virginia, is holding its
fourth Blackfriars Conference beginning Wednesday 23 October and running
through Sunday 28 October. The Conference features papers on
Shakespeare and performance with keynote presentations by Russ McDonald,
Roslyn Knutson, Stephen Greenblatt, and David Bevington, as well as a
special presentation by the American Shakespeare Center Actors in honor
of the work of Alan Dessen. Paper panels on all aspects of early modern
drama from rhetoric to audiences are in plenary session in the
Blackfriars playhouse, and more than half the papers feature actors from
the ASC resident troupe. Presenters of papers exceeding their time
limit will exit pursued by a bear. (No kidding.) Conference fee of
$300 includes admission to 5 ASC equity house productions, Romeo and
Juliet, Winter's Tale, Antony and Cleopatra, Love's Labors Lost, and
Brats of Clarence, by Paul Menzer; a special program presented by
members of REED; workshops on Voice, Rhetoric, etc.; two comic one act
plays; a session led by Don Weingust and Tiffany Stern on rehearsal
practices during the ASC's Actor's Renaissance Season; opening and
closing banquets; and a luncheon provided by the City of Staunton. For
