Subject: Christenings and Baptisms

Colleagues:

I would like to compile a list of Elizabethan and Jacobean works that
deal with christenings and baptisms. For the moment, I am not looking
for theological or liturgical treatises. I am looking for scenes in any
plays, lyric poems, controversial literature (Foxe's ACTS AND
MONUMENTS?), anything in Spenser's or Donne's works, dissident
pamphlets, parodies, woodcuts, and even any visual representations. I am
familiar with the christening scene in Thomas Middleton's A CHASTE MAID
IN CHEAPSIDE, so that title does not have to be sent, but I would
welcome as many leads as possible. To spare Hardy some work, please send
these to me offlist at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Many thanks,
Jack Heller
