Comment: Re: SHK 18.0505 Kent's Banishment

Now I have to confess confusion as to where Wells and Taylor got the
"seventh day" and "next day" business from the original texts. My F1
facsimile reads,

LEAR.
Our potencie made good, take thy reward.
Five dayes we do allot thee for provision,
To shield thee from disasters of the world,
And on the sixt to turne thy hated backe
Upon our kingdome; if on the tenth day following,
Thy banisht trunke be found in our Dominions,
The moment is thy death, away[.]

While the transcript of Q1 found at the University of Victoria's
generally reliable site here: http://ise.uvic.ca/index.html reads thus:

LEAR.
Our potency made good, take thy reward,
Foure dayes we doe allot thee for provision,
To shield thee from diseases of the world,
And on the fift to turne thy hated backe
Upon our kingdome, if on the tenth day following,
Thy banisht truncke be found in our dominions,
The moment is thy death, away[.]

After consideration, "tenth day FOLLOWING" must bring the total up to
sixteen/fifteen, respectively.

A member off-list has suggested that the Folio was based on a text
prepared during a leap year, and the Quartos during off-years, setting
the action of the play in February to explain the extra day.

Best,
Kerry Lambeth
