> wrote me asking, "is there any
way you could include original messages in the replies you send out to
the list? Often these replies go out days later, and without the
original message included below, as in most replies, we have to search
through our inboxes and find the original message, matching up who's
replying to what issue in a particular message?"
Ever now and then, I need to take the opportunity to refresh old members
and inform new members of suggestions that I have made over the years to
ease my labors and make SHAKSPER operate more effectively and
efficiently. In this regard, I would like to call members' attentions to
the SHAKSPER Netiquette page -- http://www.shaksper.net/netiquette.html
-- that is linked to the home page of the website.
The official title of this page is "Some Thoughts from SHAKSPER's Editor
Regarding Netiquette: What follows are suggestions for collegial
conduct on SHAKSPER. They are voluntary and are not in and of themselves
reasons for censure or expulsion. A summary of the main points to be
used as a quick reference is followed by a lengthily message explaining
the reasons behind the suggestions."
Suggestions are organized in the following sections: SELF-MODERATION,
SELF-GOVERNMENT, PRE-FORMATTING SUBMISSIONS, and SUGGESTIONS FOR
RESPONDING TO CONTRIBUTIONS YOU CONSIDER FOOLISH, MYOPIC, MISTAKEN, OR
BORING.
Dan's question is addressed in the Pre-Formatting Submissions section,
the second item:
Do not copy and re-send the message to which you are replying or
automatically include the entire original post or digest. Quote,
paraphrase, copy and paste, or cite your correspondent by name; give as
much of the context as you can to clarify the nature of your reply. If
you "cut and paste" information from another Internet or electronic
source, which often results in irregularly spaced lines of text, then
pre-format that text to be sure that the information is word wrapped and
does not require me to spend extra time re-formatting the text for
distribution.
I take my job as editor/moderator seriously and spend considerable time
organizing and formatting the daily digest for the list. Member can help
me out by following the suggestions in the Pre-Formatting section of the
SHAKSPER Netiquette page.
Behind the scenes,
Hardy
