Subject: Michael Kahn Receives the 2007 Gielgud Award
On May 21 English-Speaking Union and the Shakespeare Guild joined Sir
David and Lady Manning and key patrons of the Shakespeare Theatre
Company in a salute to director Michael Kahn.
As part of a gathering that was designed to celebrate this year's
Shakespeare in Washington festival, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, STC
Chairman Landon Butler, performers Helen Carey and Ted van Griethuysen,
and popular BBC host Alan Watson took part in a ceremony at which Mr.
Kahn received the 2007 Gielgud Award for Excellence in the Dramatic
Arts. Among the well-wishers who sent messages for the occasion were
three former Gielgud laureates: Zoe Caldwell, Dame Judi Dench, and
Christopher Plummer. Other greetings came from actors Keith Baxter (who
had played Prince Hal to Sir John's Henry IV in the Orson Welles film
Chimes at Midnight), Stacy Keach, and Dame Maggie Smith, not to mention
Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, who sent a congratulatory proclamation.
Should you wish to have additional information, including photographs
and excerpts from remarks by participants in the program, please let us
know.
Thanks again,
John
