Subject: Tudor/Stuart History Texts?
Can anyone recommend a good history text (or texts) that covers England
from roughly the period of Henry VIII through Charles I? I'm trying to
get some historical background and context for Elizabethan/Jacobean
theatre in general and Shakespeare in particular, since my knowledge of
the era isn't as thorough as I'd like it to be. I'd especially
appreciate any texts that go into some detail about the sociology,
economics, religion, philosophy, etc. of the period.
I've tried looking through my local library and bookstores, but
everything I've found so far is either outside the period I'm looking
for (e.g. the 11th century or the Restoration) or on too narrow a
subject (e.g. Elizabeth I). Any titles, authors, or pointers in the
right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your
time.
