Subject: Shakespeare on Video
Maggie Smith at the BBC, a three-disc set, will be released on May 20th.
It contains a 1972 TV version of The Merchant of Venice, in which Smith
plays Portia and Frank Finlay plays Shylock. Although he was a fine Iago
to Olivier's Othello (at least on film), the experience was a bruising
one, and Finlay never did much Shakespeare again. An audio Dogberry is
the only other recorded performance that I know of. Here's hoping.
