Subject: 19.0579 A Fragment of Style
Comment: Re: SHK 19.0579 A Fragment of Style
As a performer, it seems obvious to me that the strongest function of regular
meter in verse drama is to underline key moments by variation. Regularity
produces a kind of "elevation" that allows fuller, more extravagant poetic
metaphor, but I doubt that anyone at the Globe was beating time to enforce it. A
variant foot actually reinforces our sense of the meter the moment we return to
it, the exception that "proves" the rule.
