Subject: Shakespeare in Spanish and Hip-Hop Shakespeare
Chicago Shakespeare Theater is developing two world premiere productions this
summer, a bilingual Spanish-English Romeo and Juliet, Romeo y Julieta, and a
hip-hop Much Ado about Nothing, Funk It Up About Nuthin' (by two of the guys who
did Bomb-itty of Errors). I am looking for precedents for both.
I would appreciate references to productions of
1) any Shakespeare play produced as a contemporary adaptation that uses some
Spanish.
2) any professional (i.e., non-academic) production of any Shakespeare play
adapted with hip-hop language or style. This can include any kind of
performance, such as Rennie Harris' dance piece Rome and Jewels.
