Subject: American Shakespeare Center Financial Troubles
[Editor's Note: The American Shakespeare Center in its various
incarnations beginning with the Shenandoah Shakespeare Express has
played an important part in my life and the lives of the members of my
family. Later this week, I plan to post a tribute to ASC, describing
some of the ways my family and I have been deeply affected by the
phenomenon that is the ASC. Stay tuned. What follows is a brief account
of the financial difficulties facing the America Shakespeare Center. I
encourage you to go to the ASC website for further details, especially
be sure to read the message from Dan Layman, Chair of the American

Even though ticket sales at the Blackfriars Theatre have remained
strong, loss of funding resulting from the current economic climate and
from a disappearance of touring gigs have resulting in the American
Shakespeare Center's facing a serious financial crisis.
To assure its continued financial stability, the ASC initiated a Survive
and Thrive Campaign to raise $650,000 by May 1, 2009. The first phase
involved raising $250,000 by January 31, 2009. That goal has been
achieved. Now, ASC needs to raise an additional $400,000 by May 1, 2009.
