Subject: Othello's Handkerchief
I will be directing Othello this fall, and I am curious to know if the
consensus here is that Othello invents, on-the-spot, the story of the
hanky being imbued with magic, or if he truly believes that it holds
magical properties. And was it really a special favor his father had
given his mother, or does he make that part up?
I would also appreciate hearing of productions that made it obvious one
way or the other and how the scene played.
