Washington, DC

Hannibal Hamlin (more so) and Hardy Cook (less so) were somewhat
critical of Director Robert Fall's "conception" of the Lear production
at the Shakespeare Theatre in DC. I agree. But for the spectacular
performances of Stacey Keach and Edward Gero this production would
hardly have merited a standing ovation. Fall's display of countless body
bags was interminable, The junkyard scene was a poor imitation of
Wall-E. The nudity was simply unnecessary. Edgar's anterior, Lear's
posterior and Cordelia's total nakedness added nothing to the play.
Finally, the sisters' vamping of Edward and Oswald was just plainly clumsy.
