I realize this is technically a post about Emmerich's movie, which promises to be even stupider than 2012 (how will he use CGI in this one, one wonders?). And Shapiro is a serious scholar, with what looks like an important new book on the topic. But this still takes us into the territory of the Authorship Question, where there be dragons, dangerous and dumb.

[Editor's Note: Point well taken. I sent the post not without a great deal of deliberation. As I expected, I was barraged with many of the same old, same old arguments (from many of the same old senders) - "not being fair," "suppressing free speech," "not letting students hear the truth," and on and on and on. What is most pathetic is those messages sent to me from persons who have clearly imbibed too much Dutch courage. It is all I can do to maintain civility, which is probably a reason to end this note and this thread. -Hardy M. Cook]
