How about extracts from Peter Ackroyd's "Shakespeare The Biography." I found this 
book most useful for creating the background life of the times -- particularly the 
description of Shakespeare's first entrance to London. And the chapters are 
mercifully short!

But I agree -- a directly chronological approach is not necessarily the best. A 
simple wall chart can display all the important dates -- along with what else 
was happening at the time -- and leave the way clear to spend more time on the 
plays themselves.
