Subject: SHAKSPER Is Back
Dear SHAKSPER Subscribers,
I got in late Thursday after an interesting but trying return flight from the UK.
My younger daughter and I were flying home on British Air scheduled to arrive at
DC's Dulles Airport (Think DIE HARD 2) at 1:20 pm (DC time) while my older
daughter and her husband were flying United to Dulles, arriving at 3:30 pm.
Rebecca and I got off, but an hour into the flight the captain came on the faulty
PA system and announced that the plane would be returning to Heathrow
because a passenger needed medical attention. Before the plane could land it
had to dump its fuel because plane are not supposed to land with full or nearly
full tanks of jet fuel - good move that but terrible waste of carbon-based
products. After circling around for another hour, we landed and were met by an
emergency medical team. The rear emergency exit door was opened and the guy
was taken off the plane to an awaiting ambulance. Becca commented to the
woman next to her what next, aliens? - almost as she had finished speaking, a
team of guys in decontamination suits, looking eerily like aliens, got on the
plane and proceeded to disassemble the seat in which the poor traveler was
sitting and to decontaminate the rear of the plane - apparently he had internal
bleeding and somehow must have bled out.
Since the PA system was not working properly, the captain began to circulate
around the plane saying that he hoped we would be in the air within an hour,
that he plane had already been refueled but that the crew was waiting for food
to be delivered. The crew had been ready to distribute the in-flight meal when
the decision was made to return to Heathrow, so I imagine those meals had to
be thrown out and replaced with fresh ones and from the looks of the diverse
passengers with us, I am sure that my daughter and I were not the only ones
who had ordered special meals.
When we did get off for our return to Washington, DC, we were informed we
would land at around 6:00 pm instead of our initial 1:20 time. We had not been
allowed off the plane, so knowing my older daughter when we would not be
there to meet her and she would find out that our plane had to return to
Heathrow because of a medical emergency, I just knew that she would create a
scenario with me as the ill person and well you get the picture - we had a
trying day, and I especially did with my leg problems stuffed into a small
airplane seat for fourteen hours - quite an adventure.
I have done the best I could going through the thousands of messages in my
inbox; however, if you sent a message to me and do not see it in tomorrow's
round of digests, please resend your submission to me with my apologies.
Also, I shall be making some announcements soon about the impending newly
designed SHAKSPER web site, about the SHAKSPER Book Review Panel, and about
improvements in the web services.
Finally, subscribers should expect some minor interruptions in service over the
next few months as the web site and I both get several upgrades.
