Subject: NEH Summer Institute on Shakespeare at Folger
Shakespeare: From the Globe to the Global:
An NEH Summer Institute for College and University Teachers at the Folger Institute
Apply by 1 March 2011 to participate in an NEH Summer Institute at the Folger.
Director Michael Neill will guide an examination of Shakespeare's growth from a
playwright on London's Bankside to the most significant representative of a
globalized literary culture. The focus will be on the historical processes through
which Shakespeare has been reconstituted as England's literary patron saint and the
bard of empire? once the peculiar incarnation of Englishness and the most universal
of all writers. A stellar group of visiting faculty will discuss such themes as
"History in the Globe," "The Globe in History" and "Imagining Boundaries: Nation and
Plantation" before moving "Beyond the Boundaries" to "Shakespeare in/as Empire" and
"Shakespeare in the Contemporary World," including stage, screen, and new media.
Please note: Advanced graduate students are newly eligible to apply to NEH Summer
Institutes for College and University Teachers.
