Subject: Call for Papers on Essay by D. Hawkes
Early Modern Culture is planning a special issue to take up the interface of Cognitive Science and Early
Modern Studies: "New Idealism?"
We will be changing format for this issue. Instead of what has become our usual mode -- a set of core
articles with a respondent to all of them -- we have secured an essay by David Hawkes to which we invite,
and will publish, a number of short -- approximately 3,000 word -- responses.
David makes the provocative argument that if Cognitive Science represents the new "materialism" then
literary studies, in response, should be "idealist."
We have been, and will be, contacting several senior scholars, whose work takes up similar issues, to
respond, but we are particularly keen to hear from others, especially junior faculty, whose work might
have eluded us heretofore. If you wish to nominate yourself, or a colleague, as a potential respondent,
please contact Crystal Bartolovich at: <
