For those who haven't seen it, my review of "Anonymous" is here:

The Shakespeare Authorship page (http://shakespeareauthorship.com) also includes numerous links to other online articles about the film.

I have been banned from this listserv for several years now, recently permitted on again only because Weiss and Co. published their attack on my book. I'm allowed only to reply to emails concerning me personally. A couple of weeks ago I submitted to this listserv a copy of the editorial concerning Anonymous I published in the current Oxfordian
--
a serious discussion, I'd say. Hardy Cook refused to publish it on the grounds that it was "too Oxfordian." For the record, I am not an Oxfordian but the Shakespeare Oxford Society still allows me to edit their annual journal and their quarterly newsletter, and without ideological pressure. They actually trust my scholarly objectivity. Big joke, eh Al Magary?

There are indeed historical inaccuracies in the movie, just as in Shakespeare. So what? I make the point in my editorial. Anyone who wants a copy can write privately to me.

There are two issues here.

First, my so-called banning from membership in SHAKSPER. As a requirement for membership, I request a brief biography: http://shaksper.net/contact. When I receive a request from someone who is an anti-Stratfordian, I write back and remind the person that I do not post submissions dealing with the so-called authorship question. If the person still wishes to subscribe, I add the member. I do not post all submissions; this is a moderated list. But I cannot recall EVER banning someone from membership. I do ignore submissions that I have explained are not appropriate but are continued to be submitted. But I do not ban anyone. The before the list relocated to its current residence, there were problems with SHAKSPER’s being “blacklisted” and problems with anti-SPAMing software that caused all members with certain domains, AOL for example, to be deleted from the list, but I do not ban membership. Now, my memory of the past six and a half year’s when I was taking large doses of narcotic medication for my chronic pain issues (from which I detoxed at the beginning of this year) may be a bit cloudy, but I cannot recall banning anyone. Banning certain submission, yes, but banning membership, no.

Second, the issue of banned submissions. I made it clear in 1994 that I would not longer post submissions about the authorship question. As a responsible academic, I feel that I have a duty to ignore scholarly unsound submissions. So, yes, I have and do ban certain submissions.

Now, as for Michael Egan’s editorial concerning Anonymous published in the current Oxfordian. Given what I have just written, let me quote the last line of this editorial “We should spruce up the parlor and stock our pantries because a great number of visitors will soon be calling. I predict that the conference of 2012 will be the biggest in anti-Stratfordian history.” Yes, I informed Michael Egan that I would not post this submission.

Best wishes,

Hardy M. Cook, Ph.D.
