Alan Dessen’s speculations on ‘silence’ are fascinating. I wonder what he would make of the difference between the Quarto and Folio readings of Much Ado Act 5.497: “Peace I will stop your mouth” especially if the figure of Leonato’s wife ‘Innogen’ (excised completely from edited texts by traditional and feminist editors alike) were to be silently present on stage, but whose ‘silence’ in itself speaks?
