Subject:     Merchant Thread

Dear All,

Since I have been associated with SHAKSPER for approaching 25 years, one might think that I have finally figured out how to moderate this sometimes lively academic conference.

The answer is “Nahhh, not really.”

I should confess that whenever a thread on Hamlet or Merchant of Venice begins I gasp and hold my breath for a moment in Pinteresque dread, wondering what byzantine paths the impending thread might take us.

Hamlet used to be one of my favorite of Shakespeare’s plays; well, I guess it still is. But I have never particularly liked Merchant or Shrew.

As to the current thread on Merchant, I find it rather troubling.

I have decided to put on hold this discussion in deference to my friends celebrating the High Holy Days, Shanah Tovah, and I will give myself several days to think about resuming it.
