I must agree with the argument that is made on behalf of the Elizabethan 
audience. Shakespeare was writing plays to be understood by those who 
were seeing them or he was writing plays to possibly manipulate the 
thinking of those who were seeing his plays. Studying Danish History 
doesn't explain Hamlet. The play has to be understood in terms of what 
was going on in the Elizabethan Court. Henry V has to be understood in 
the same vein.

I remember 50 years ago waiting in line to buy a standing room ticket 
for Arthur Miller's "Crucible". It was certainly not because I came from 
the North Shore of Boston and was fascinated by Salem witchcraft lore!
