Subject: Patrick Stewart's Merchant
Back in 2002-2003, two Merchant of Venice films were announced almost
concurrently, one with Al Pacino and directed by Michael Radford, the
other with (and I believe directed by) Patrick Stewart. As we know, the
Pacino film was completed, while the Stewart film was tabled to create
more space between the two. Last Saturday, I approached Patrick Stewart
after his performance in the RSC Antony & Cleopatra and inquired about
his film.
He told me that production begins in two week, presumably right after he
finishes the RSC's Ann Arbor residency. Apparently everything you need
to know about the film will be posted on Ian McKellen's website
(www.mckellen.com), though there doesn't appear to be anything there
yet. My understanding was that the original conception for Stewart's
film was to be modern dress/corporate, but time will tell whether that
approach will be maintained or not.
More details as they filter down.
