Subject: DVD Wish List
As I indicated that I would in SHK 17.0964: "Re: SHK 17.0952 Film/TV
Course and DVD Wish List," I am posting a DVD Wish List that reflects what
I have learned so far about the availability of Shakespeare DVD titles
that I am interested in purchasing commercially.
I also ask for SHAKSPER members to submit titles that they would like to
see released on DVD. (I have included in Group 4 below one such title that
was suggested by Patty Winter.) Together, maybe we can make it known that
there is a substantial audience of both academics and non-academics with
considerable purchasing power who would buy high quality DVDs were they
available.
Group 1
Titles that I believe are available for Region 2 release that I would also
like to see released in Region 1 and-or internationally without regional
restrictions:
Tony Richardson (UK, 1969), HAMLET (with Nichol Williamson),
Peter Brook (UK, 1971), KING LEAR (with Paul Scofield)
Steward Burge (UK, 1965), OTHELLO (with Laurence Olivier)
Group 2
Titles that have been released in VHS that I would like to see released in
Region 1 and-or internationally without regional restrictions:
Reinhardt and Dieterle (USA, 1935), A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
Jonathan Miller (UK, 1969), THE MERCHANT OF VENICE (with Laurence Olivier)
Peter Greenaway (1991), PROSPERO'S BOOKS (with Gielgud)
Paul Mazursky (USA, 1981), TEMPEST (Cassavetes, Raul Julia)
Svend Gade (Germany, 1920), HAMLET, THE DRAMA OF VENGEANCE (with Asta
Nielsen: VHS has German titles - I would like to have a version with
English titles)
Group 3
Titles that to my knowledge have not been released at all that I would
like to see released in Region 1 and-or internationally without regional
restrictions:
George Schaefer (USA, 1954), MACBETH (with Evans and Anderson for Hallmark
TV)
George Schaefer (USA, 1960), MACBETH (Evans and Anderson for Hallmark TV)
Tadashi Suzuki (Japan, 1988), THE TALE OF LEAR (with Tom Hewitt and
Jeffrey Bihr)
Group 4
Titles that members of SHAKSPER would like to be available on DVD
Luke/Saville (UK/Denmark, 1964), HAMLET AT ELSINORE (with Christopher
Plummer)
PS: Question for all those Intellectual Property lawyers out there for my
information and not in the interests of starting another thread: Would I
get into legal trouble were I to take the images from my VHS copy of
HAMLET, THE DRAMA OF VENGEANCE and replace the German titles with English
titles to create a version for my own research and for my students use in
classroom related activities? What about if I then burned these images
together with my English titles onto a DVD for my research and for my
student's academic use?
