Subject: The Death of Joseph Papp
Dear Fellow SHAKSPEReans;
Although electronic networks are among the liveliest of media, it is
ironic that they also seem to be the first sources of unfortunate news.
SHAKSPER sadly reported the loss of O.B. Hardison Jr. last August,
of Northrop Frye in January, of Fredson Bowers in May, and of Dame
Peggy Ashcroft in June.
Now, it seems, they have been joined by New York producer and director
Joseph Papp. I have not yet seen or heard mention of his passing in
print or broadcast news, but two recent postings on Rec.arts.theatre,
an Internet newsgroup unavailable to most SHAKSPEReans on Bitnet, seem
to be certain of their facts, so I reproduce them below. (The first note
was posted by Lorin Wertheimer, who is also a member of SHAKSPER).

One of the greatest producers of our day, Joseph Papp, died yesterday.
I have no more information, when it is available I will post. Sorry.

From A CHORUS LINE to the Public Theatre to Shakespeare in the park,
this man was a power. He helped George C. Scott, Martin Sheen, and a
host of others get their breaks. His Shakespeare In the Park series
has starred Kevin Kline, Morgan Freeman, Tracey Ullman, and Denzel
Washington - and that was just in the last two years.
He died of cancer yesterday (10/31) in his Greenwich Village apartment.
