How likely it may have been in Shakespearian times is a question that
is up for grabs (like many of the recent doubling questions on
SHAKSPER), but it has been done on many an occasion.  I distinctly
remember a touring production by a British company in 1983(?) down in
Costa Rica, where they played Hamlet with only 6 actors, if memory
serves me well.  Claudius-Ghost, and Polonius-Gravedigger (as Tom
Loughlin mentions) were two of the doublings used in that one.
