Brian Sobus-
Definitely! I think MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO is clearly derived from
the Henry IV plays, although probably more likely from the Orson Welles
film CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT. The stagings are very similar in these two films.
The relationship between Scott and Bob is very similar to the Hal and
Falstaff's relationship in Henry IV, though perhaps more clearly homosexual
in IDAHO. There are several modernizations in the film, including the theft
of Bob's cocaine--rather than the theft of Falstaff's purse. Van Sant's
film also shows Scott going through changes similar to those Hal went
through when his father died. The one question I have about IDAHO is about
Mike (River Phoenix). What exactly is the importance of a narcileptic here?
