I agree with Nancy Miller about the value of documents not specifically
"intended" to "function" as we might think. For a slightly off-topic
but amusing illustration of how we might mis-read, see Russell Hoban's
wonderful novel *Riddley Walker*, in which a 15th century wall-painting
of St. Eustace is misread into "chemistery and fizzics."
