Subject: Popularity of the Plays
Concerning the popularity of Shakespearean plays, Gerald Eades Bentley suggests
>...Slightly more than half his <Shakespeare's> dramatic work had never been
printed before his death (169).
> _Richard II_ was one of Shakespeare's more popular plays; and before his
death it had been more than four times reprinted (175).
> _Richard III_ was even more popular with readers than _Richard II_ (175),
> The first eight plays of Shakespeare to appear in print did not seem to their
publishers apt to derive any advantage from the display of his name (177).
