Subject: Hamlet's tables
Re: Justin Bacon's comments on Hamlet's tables.
The stage direction 'he writes' dates from Rowe's edition of 1709 so we
have him to thank for it all. I must admit it's something that really
annoys me when it is made literal on stage. However, as Rosenberg's
'Masks of Hamlet' shows Rowe's stage direction has been interpreted in a
variety of ways, and sometimes ignored - thank goodness!
