Scott Oldenburg,

Your search for pop music's appropriations of Shakespeare reminded me of
the song "Desdemona" sung by the television cast of "Fame" and included
on the first album produced by that series. I'm sorry, I don't remember
the year or the name of the album, but I do remember thinking it was a
pretty good song.

Given the posts recently about Shakespeare Spin-Offs, I hope that the
list will not mind if I send in another post about my own parody /
spin-offs.

The best one is "A NIGHT IN ELSINORE," which is "HAMLET" rewritten for
the Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy and the Three Stooges. The script
is available on the internet at

http://www.dramex.org/plays/scripts/elsinore.txt

It's been staged once at Pasadena City College. It is currently being
rehearsed for a production by a community youth center in Chino,
California. I will send in more details when I get them.

I have also written "HOW SHARPER THAN A SERPENT'S TOOTH," which is "KING
LEAR" rewritten for W.C. Fields, and "SCOTS ON THE ROCKS" which is
Macbeth rewritten for Abbott & Costello. I sent them to a friend, and
he told me that he has attempted to put them up at

http://www.geocities.com/~jbenz/lear.html
        and
http:/www.geocities.com/~jbenz.macbeth.html

But I haven't checked that out yet. In the meantime, I'd be happy to
e-mail copies to anyone who requests them.

Subject: Spin-offs

There are two full length New Zealand plays which qualify as Shakespeare
spin-offs and have been successfully produced by professional, amateur
and school groups recently.

They are "Revenge of the Amazons" (from A Midsummer Night's Dream) and
"Ophelia Thinks Harder" obviously from Hamlet, by playwright Jean
Betts.

Both can be got from Playmarket, the playwrights' agency in Wellington
which has a web site on www.playmarket.org.nz
