This psalm 46 thing seems to come round with increasing frequency on
this list. As the question of its source has been raised, let me say
that it is a lot earlier than Anthony Burgess's work. Burgess himself
cited Rudyard Kipling's short story 'Proofs of Holy Writ' (which I've
never been able to find in any collection). I believe that the idea was
also put forward in a magazine in 1901. I have the citation somewhere at
home, so if anyone really wants to know, please email me off-list and
I'll dig it out.
