Steve Sohmer reckons that the hourly tolling of the bells of St. Mary
Overy (now Southwark Cathedral) and St. Bennet's at Paul's Wharf would
be audible inside the Globe (_Shakespeare's Mystery Play_, Manchester
UP, 1999, p. 96). Sohmer finds uses of this phenomenon in JC, TN, and
HAM.

I think it's clowning. When we did the play, the constant referral to
the time struck us, and so the entire cast donned cheap looking watches
of all manner of descriptions, and whenever any reference to the time
was made, everyone checked their watches. A & D of Syracuse had watches
with fliptop covers, and they developed a running gag of flipping them
open and shut in unison.
To extend the discussion even further, we noticed the same thing in our
recent production of Shrew, although we resisted the temptation to pull
the same gag. Has anyone else noticed the constant references to the
time in Shrew?
