This is behindhand but not hopelessly so. Tom Dale Keever urges us to
enter the Random House Shakespeare Prequel Contest, but may not have
noticed contest rule 7: "All submissions become the sole property of
Random House, Inc. and may be published and reproduced in any and all
forms and media throughout the world, without further obligation." In
other words, your brilliantly moving and perceptive and funny account of
the origins of the Capulet-Montague feud could go on to become a minor
masterpiece, anthologized all over the place, made into a megahit movie
and then a TV series, and your total reward would be three copies of
*Gertrude and Claudius* and 10 other Updike books which, if you are like
me, you already own. It's hard to imagine a serious writer so hungry
that this particular mess of pottage will satisfy.
