I am glad to read Jack Kamen's positive response. The alternative press
has been scathing, finding fault with a production which overloads and
inhibits the acting company, and, for all its life and stunts, serves
the play only on the surface level. I myself will be interested in
seeing it when I take my student group in March-especially since a
couple of my recent students are in it.

It is interesting to 'listen' to this recent string on MND. I've been
working in the literary department at the Guthrie - where this
incarnation of MND originated - for the last 18 months. When MIDSUMMER
NIGHT'S DREAM opened (I believe it was February 14, 1997) it was an
enormous success, critically, as well as with the theater-going public.
The entire run sold out shortly after opening night. There was such an
enormous demand to see it that the Guthrie added several performances -
which also sold out immediately.

When MND opened in Chicago, I read the reviews from the Tribune and the
Sun. One of the periodicals applauded Joe Dowling's artistic vision,
the other thought... I cannot recall the words exactly, but the review
was not flattering.

This Saturday, February 26, the Guthrie will begin a tour of MND that
will include several cities in the upper Midwest. The tour opens in St.
Cloud, MN and closes May 13 in Austin, MN. The show visits St. Louis,
Omaha, Green Bay, Des Moines, Rapid City, Eau Claire and Fargo/Moorhead
during its 17-city, 11-week run. Not to gratuitously plug the Guthrie,
but if anyone IS interested in catching this production on tour, there
is a schedule on the Guthrie's homepage at: www.guthrietheater.org that
has ticket information, dates, etc.

Personally, I thought the production was delightful, fresh and
intelligent when I saw it in '97. My wife and I are going to see it
this weekend, opening night, in St. Cloud.
