Subject: Merchant Wedding

A colleague of mine has just finished teaching Merchant of Venice to her
ninth grade class. Here's her question. When does the marriage of
Portia and Bassanio take place? Portia sends Bassanio away before they
can solemnize the marriage when she first hears, by letter, that
Antonio's life is in danger. Then, at the end of the play she and
Nerissa return, have the spat over the rings with Bassanio and Gratiano,
reconcile with their lovers and head off to bed. Are they already
married at this point? If so, when did it happen?
