I have indeed been preoccupied, not only with the usual business of a
new term, but with the question Kent Heiatt asks. I'm not aware of any
word-frequency list on the Internet (and will be delighted if anyone
else can point us to it), so have generated a frequency list to post on
the ISE site. It's probably not especially useful, since for copyright
reasons I have had to use the dated and inaccurate public domain texts
currently available, but, for what they are worth, two versions of the
list are available from this address:
I do expect to generate more useful frequency lists in due course, since
counting things is one of the activities that computers enjoy.
