Going a little off our general track, Ohio actually was both a
wilderness and a plum in 1770s-1780s.  Marietta--named for Marie
Antoinette--was settled by Revolutionary War officers, who were paid for
their war service in land.  So if Cornwallis had won, he and his
officers would probably have been paid in Ohio land as well.
