What strikes me about all the postings on this subject is that although
Hamlet says he can tell the difference between a hawk and a handsaw, it
is not absolutely clear that we can.

Could Hamlet be warning Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern that he knows they
are tools of the king, and that he, unlike the King, can tell them
apart?  This seemed to be Branagh's interpretation, as he had Hamlet
pointedly address one (I know a hawk), then turn and address the other
(from a handsaw).  It seemed to work, though I had other problems with
the production.
