I haven't read Ann Barton's book on names, but there is a story called
*Euordanus* [Euordanus. The First and second part of the historie of the
famous Euordanus Prince of Denmark. With the Strange adventures of Iago
Prince of Saxonie: and of both theyr severall fortunes in Loue. At
London, Printed by I.R. for R.B. and are to be sold in Paules
Church-yard, at the figure of the Sun, 1605](STC 10566.5 )

Iago is the son of the Duke of Saxony, who had adopted Euordanus (lost
in the wood). Other threads feature a lascivious Duke Otho of Vienna,
and a princess Emilia, whose hand is disputed at a tournament in Paris.

There are two manuscript notes on the microfilm copy I read: -On the
coverleaf there is a MS note by Dr. Bliss, after the title: "I know of
no other copy of this extremely rare Romance, which was purchased by Mr.
Herber at Reed's Sale, except one (and that a perfect one) in Lord
Pencer's Library." -Another MS. note by J.O.H. says: "It is supposed
that Shakespeare took the name of Iago from this work."

Rather speculative, but who knows?

Best wishes,
Monica Matei-Chesnoiu
