Subject: Plagiarism and Cheating, Again
Since there was recent discussion here about term paper mills and other
student evasions of doing real work, I thought I'd send along this news
item from a shareware newsletter called Rocket Download:
>Professor's Program Busts Plagiarists (Aug. 9)
>Remember the anxiety back in college when you were waiting to find out the
>grade on your term project? Well, imagine the stress level of about one
>hundred University of Virginia students who are waiting to hear if they
>have been expelled for plagiarism. Louis Bloomfield, a physics professor
>at the University, wrote a program that scanned his database of 1,800 old
>and current papers (his students have been required to submit their papers
>electronically for the last five semesters). Documents that matched more
>than 500 words were turned over to the student Honor Committee. As a
>result, 10 cases will proceed to trial and 90 await further
>investigation. So far one student has been expelled, and others who have
>already graduated could have their degrees revoked.
